Samson Alex Mlinda is a Congolese refugee, fashion designer, and social entrepreneur who believes that every human being deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, regardless of where they come from or what they have lost along the way.
As the founder of Balwa Africa and KULOLA Initiative Hub, Samson is dedicated to creating opportunities for refugees and vulnerable communities to rebuild their lives through creativity, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship. His work is rooted in a simple but powerful conviction: talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not. Through fashion, education, and community, he is determined to close that gap.
Having experienced displacement firsthand, Samson understands that the greatest loss is often not material possessions, but the loss of confidence, identity, and the belief that a different future is possible. That is why his mission extends far beyond tailoring and fashion design. He creates spaces where people can rediscover their strengths, learn practical skills, and regain the confidence to shape their own future.
Through Balwa Africa, Samson combines African craftsmanship with economic empowerment, producing custom-made garments, school uniforms, tote bags, accessories, and products made from traditional kitenge fabrics. Yet Balwa Africa is much more than a fashion enterprise. It is a vehicle for transformation that turns creativity into livelihoods and resilience into opportunity.
With KULOLA Initiative Hub, Samson has created a place where refugees and host communities come together to learn, grow, and build new possibilities. Through practical training, mentorship, and entrepreneurship programs, the initiative empowers women, especially single mothers, young people seeking employment, and vulnerable communities striving for independence and self-reliance.
Driven by resilience, creativity, collaboration, and a deep commitment to serving others, Samson dreams of a future in which refugees are recognized not by what they have lost, but by what they are capable of creating. He believes that every individual carries untapped potential and that, when given the right opportunities, people can become entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers within their communities.
